Christianity has always had to fight off heretical teachers and movements. Paul and Peter wrestled with the "Gnostics". A heresy of having a "higher knowlege." There are others in history who have claimed a higher knowledge than what scripture plainly teaches. A sort of "New Gnosticism" (or Neognosticism) is the loosely associated movement called "Postmodern" or "The Emerging Church."
It is every bit as cultic in nature as Jehova's Witness and Mormonism, though it is less organized as these. Yet, the teachings of leaders within the heresy dress sharp, act hip, and have a trance-like grasp on their inexperienced followers. Most people who get involved in the Emerging Church are those who claim to be intelligent, yet have not found the historical Jesus portrayed by evangelicals and main line denominationalism, satisfying.
Hence they produce doctrines which are inventions of thought instead of truth from the Word.
Here is a case in point. A radio interview from Dr. John MacArthur. Listen to the twisting of the Word of God by the Emerging Church preacher and listen as Dr. MacArthur explains the problem.
My prayer is that everyone who hears Dr. MacArthur might be able to resist the easy temptation to fall victim to this thinking. If you would like to read more about the heresy of the Postmodern Emergant Church Click Here
(A Note to my Restoration Movement brothers and sisters: No, I am not "going Baptist" on you.
Dr. MacArthur is an independent Baptist in his affiliation. For most Restorationists, there are really only three doctrines which we differ with the Southern Baptists. But, the basic understanding of scripture and the authority of the Word, and the Lordship of Jesus of Nazareth is shared by the Independent Christian Church and Southern Baptists. What Dr. MacArthur has to say in this interview is valid and authoritative.)
